Health is generated by the efficiency of our physiology. Posture and physical health are often overlooked in our allopathic medical system’s approach. Not only is there a direct correlation with our posture to how we physically feel, but emotional and mental health follow by way of our postures as well. An understanding of how posture influences function is often understood when pain is involved. Pain contributes to the distortion of posture and movement patterns, which eventually leads to more pain and more loss of function.
Hence, the word disease: dis-ease, or lack of ease. Our structure is meant to be upright. When we see a posture, take for example sitting at the computer, we note not only the compression and distortion at the spine, but also the compression, or dis-ease, of the digestive tract and decreased lung capacity, both of which are often overlooked.
Over time a compromised posture, and repetitive stress may not only cause back and neck pain, but may also lead to further complications. Take, for example, compression of the digestive system which easily impairs the ability of passing and digesting of foods. This, in turn, frequently results in gastrointestinal complications such as constipation and/or GERD. The collapsing of the thoracic spine and rib cage also impairs the full function of the diaphragm and reduces lung capacity; thus limiting intake of oxygen. A reduction in oxygen intake impairs circulation which can hinder heart function, decreases the ability of the immune system to fight bacteria and viruses, and causes a decline in the regeneration of injured soft-tissues. Bodies that undergo this constant stress and struggle with gravity will also develop muscular imbalances. Muscular imbalance leads to injuries, myofascial discomfort and pain. Eventually, pain interferes with our mental health and as a result, emotional health declines.
